"Welcome to Specialist Marine Interiors"
“Our commitment and passion is to produce superyacht interiors of a superior quality without compromise, and to offer substantial advantages in design and bottom line through revolutionary and innovative systems and the efficiencies of remote build interiors.”
At Specialist Marine Interiors we construct handcrafted interiors for luxury vessels using only the highest quality materials, to ensure the end product has a superior finish that will not only meet our high standards, but also the expectations of our clients.
We have pioneered a new and innovative system at SMI to build the complete interior for boats without needing the vessel on-site. Our system uses a combination of ‘box in box’ construction and replicating actual contours at vessel interface areas in our factory. We assemble this interior completely, fitting the furniture, trim and luxury finishes, then dis-assemble and containerize the interior ready to be shipped and fitted to the vessel when it is available, anywhere around the world.
This reduces overall time on the project resulting in increased efficiency, faster turnaround and therefore cost savings.
An early advantage of our system is that you are able to walk through the interiors as they are being built in our workshop, feel the space, see and touch the finishes and monitor the progress either personally or by secure web page update. If design changes are required it is substantially more cost-effective to do at this stage than when the boat is completed. It also means structural work is carried out at the same time as the interior, again saving time.
Another point of difference is our revolutionary snap-on system, enabling all luxury paneling, doorframes and trims to be removed with a simple snap fitting. This reliable and secure system offers enormous benefits in terms of routine service; if an item is damaged it is easily and cost effectively replaced.
All polishing is done off the boat, so finishing touches don’t go into the vessel until all other trades have finished their work, which eliminates the potential for damage to finishes.
Specialist Marine Interiors can retain all the jigs and patterns for the luxury finishes for your yacht, ensuring any subsequent service or refit work is performed in much less time, to get you back on the water quickly.
Modular construction of the vessel saves not only down time but also money, and can be a feature when marketing your yacht once you have moved on.
Our new hardened timber finish for use in high traffic areas and crew quarters has won acclaim from both pleasure and commercial skippers.
This superior finish is as hard as Formica type laminates, yet doesn’t have the same edging problems and can offer substantial savings in construction. We can easily match any of the latest styles and patterns. The timber finish has proven to be a harder-wearing surface, which is vital when addressing the practical requirements for a yacht.
Specialist Marine Interiors is founded and directed by boatbuilder Grant Willis, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge in building interiors for yachts, and having lived aboard for many years, appreciates the particulars involved.
Grant has assembled a team of committed professionals from all over the world with a wide range of experience in the interior finish of superyachts. Combine that with a close link with our sister company, renowned interior yacht designers TBW Design, and our pleasant subtropical location in Whangarei, New Zealand, and it makes us a unique facility in this part of the world.
